Ways to Participate

Prepare for a local public meeting

Read the agenda before deciding how to contribute.

Check the official notice

Find the meeting on the public body’s own website. Review the agenda, location, access arrangements and any published participation instructions. Comment procedures and schedules vary; an older meeting notice may not describe the current process.

Connect your comment to the decision

Identify the agenda item and the particular question you want to address. Prepare a short explanation of the relevant experience, evidence and requested action. If the topic is outside that body’s authority, ask where it should be directed.

Follow the record

After the meeting, check the official minutes, recording or subsequent agenda when available. A public comment is part of participation, not a guarantee of a particular result. Keep track of what was decided, what was postponed and what information the body requested. That helps make a later contribution more specific.

Bring it to the conversation

  • What item is on the agenda?
  • What participation instructions apply?
  • Where will the decision be recorded?
