Government Explained

Find the right level of government for your concern

A national debate and a local decision may involve different offices.

Begin with the decision

Before writing to an official, identify the decision you want changed. A local street, a state program and a federal statute may lead to different institutions. Do not assume that the most visible office is the one responsible for the matter.

Use official directories

USAGov provides pathways to state and local government information and elected-official contacts. Start there, then use the relevant office’s own website to confirm its responsibilities and contact process. Agency names and local structures vary.

Ask for a referral

If you are uncertain, describe the issue briefly and ask the office whether it has responsibility. Request the appropriate contact if it does not. Keep a record of the reply. A targeted message is more likely to reach someone who can explain the actual decision than a broad complaint sent to unrelated offices.

Bring it to the conversation

  • What decision needs attention?
  • Which body has responsibility?
  • What official contact confirms it?
